Round 1 Report
The first round of the Comp Safari League (Kindly sponsored by Cafe Marseilles) was held at the annual Easter Interclub at Nant Mawr, Oswestry. Additional land made available to the club this year allowed for additional terrain not previously used in the event which look the competitors a scenic tour of the Shropshire moors with a fantastic view (if you had time to catch it).
The initial steady look-see run was led by Kenny Powell in his Matseratti - although some confusion reigned when he returned to the pits - without any motors following! The laps had been set at 5 runs with 4 to count - with the added penalty points carrying over, even from the dropped time. These particularly high penalty scores were mainly set in reference to the high quarry faces as a safety issue, Clerk of Course Phil Kelly took the view that safety was more paramount to potential accidents and happily the event proceeded with no hospitalisations - although the on-site paramedic (Hazels Mum) was faintly disappointed not to be able to use her new box of plasters.
Special comment to be made for competitor number 9 (who?) who managed to score maximum penalty points on the first run by taking out both sets of hazard warning tape - this was awarded by much finger wagging from the CoC until the concept of lowest-time-and-lowest-penalty-points-wins was realised/re-educated. The Rally Raid Beady team in the Dakar Desert Warrior was of particular interest to the spectators although the tight corners were rather problematic for the experienced team.
As dusk drew in on the quarry the times consistently got quicker and the final results left last years overall League winner Warren Roper (V8) in 1st place - 1 second ahead of 2nd placed Rob Pursey (V8) - 1 second ahead of 3rd placed Neal Mellish (V6). Now this has surely got to be more exciting than the Formula 1? Despite the event being open to none ALRC vehicles it was gratifying to see the top motors all being from the ALRC classes!
Monday morning and a deluge of additional competitors arrived from other cancelled events around the country. The day comp safari was held with extra land from the evening before. Although the points for the league that counted from this weekend are for night and day - the day comp was well attended by neighbouring clubs - despite the adverse conditions.
The rain overnight had made a considerable difference to the course and the look-see run - this time led by Phil Wood in his 88" coiler - saw many a motor spinning off on the wet grass. Again a special mention for the driver of vehicle number 22 (naming no names) who took a wrong line and missed the gate completely on the very field that he had helped to hammer the stakes in on the day previously. The drivers experienced a slightly later start than planned, as a number of alterations were necessary once the actual drivability of the course had been assessed. With the drivers instructed to get their first run in during the first hour of the comp, it was necessary for everyone to experience the particularly wet conditions.
The downward slalom into the horses meadow (featuring real horses - did you spot them?) was particularly tricky throughout the morning leaving the Dave the Marshall and his Dog well occupied in keeping the stakes where God Phil had intended them. Steven Ham was also kept busy in the top field with the simple S bend which gave drivers a unique chance to test out their full lock to lock capabilities (although perhaps they might not have all agreed). With the course very tight for space and safety being the biggest issue the course was closed on every occasion necessary in order to replace the tape and stakes, however the event still flowed and by this point Wayne Armitage was leading the field with most runs under his belt by lunch time.
As the afternoon progressed the sunshine eventually shone on the competitors and began to dry out the course - as a result the times were much quicker and competitors were now running on minute intervals as opposed to 30 seconds. The open competitors finally found their momentum - with the 2 wheeled drive special (number 144) putting in good times.
Warren Roper won the day putting him in a fantastic position for the start of the 2010 league results. Ken Powell in 2nd place and Gordon Renshaw 3rd. Don't forget that competitors can still register to compete up until the next round - as the lowest score will be discounted at the end of the results.
Final electronic results will be sent out to all competitors w/c 12th April (once the results officer has returned home)
